(09/04/1555-01/05/1555)
Marcello Cervini (1501-1555) succeeds Julius III. A serious priest and an upright cardinal, he distinguished himself at the Council of Trent as papal legate. His election reflects a spirit of renewal in the Church. On April 30, 1555, he suffered an apoplexy and died the next day. His pontificate lasted only 22 days.
