Biafra is a region in the south-east of Nigeria mainly populated by the Igbos. Following serious ethnic unrest sparked by a series of coups, the region seceded on May 30, 1967 and became the self-proclaimed Republic of Biafra. At the end of a long and deadly war and against a backdrop of humanitarian crisis, the last Biafran armed forces capitulated on January 9, 1970. Biafra was reintegrated into Nigeria on January 15, 1970.
