TURKEY - SULTAN ABDULMEJID
(AH 1255-1277/1839-1861)
Abdoul Medjid (23/04/1823 - 25/06/1861) succeeded his father Mahmoud II (1808-1839). He was the thirty-first Ottoman sultan and the ally of the French and the English in the Crimean War (1854-1855). The new sultan began the Tanzimat period, marking a period of reform for the Ottoman Empire. His half-brother Abdoul Aziz succeeded him (1861-1876).
