历史细节

ROMAN SENATE - CHARLES OF FRANCE

(1263-1284)

Second Senate

Charles will play a very important role in Italy in the second half of the 13th century and will have several pro-French popes elected, including Gregory X and Martin IV. After the election of Clement IV in 1265, Charles received the investiture of the Kingdom of Naples at the expense of Manfred who was killed at the Battle of Benevento in 1267. When Clement IV died in 1268, there was a three-year interregnum during which Etienne Tempier, bishop of Paris, handles current affairs. Gregory X would not be elected until 1271 under pressure from Philip III, Charles of Naples and the Viterbois who walled in the Cardinals. Innocent V (1276), Adrian V (1276), John XXI (1276-1277), Nicolas III (1277-1280), Martin IV (1281-1285) and Honoré IV (1285-1287) will then follow one another.
