PIERRE ANDRÉ DE SUFFREN DE SAINT-TROPEZ, called BAILLI OF SUFFREN
(1729-1788)
Entering the guards of the navy in 1743, Pierre André de Suffren de Saint-Tropez passed in 1748 in the order of Malta where he became commander and bailiff. Returning to the Royal Navy, he won victories during the American War of Independence and in India in the Bay of Bengal (victories at Sadras and Porto-Novo, port of Trinquemale in Sri Lanka on August 25, 1782, Gondelour the June 20, 1783). He was made vice-admiral after the Peace of Versailles (1783). He was killed in a duel in 1788.
