Pertinax was assassinated after a reign of 86 days on March 28, 193. After the elimination of Dide Julien on June 2, 193, one of the first acts of Septimius Severus was to honor the memory of his illustrious predecessor and present himself as his avenger. He adopted as his nickname the cognomen of the deceased emperor.
