LYONNAIS - LYON - RUDOLPH III
(993-1032)
Rodolphe III is the uncle of the Duke of Bavaria Henry, future King of Germany and crowned emperor in 1014 in Rome under the name of Henry II in 1014. In 1016, in Strasbourg, Rudolph recognizes his nephew as protector and heir, however all the towns of the county of Burgundy, under the authority of the count of Besançon, Otte-Guillaume, closed their doors to the emperor. In 1018, he renewed his promise. The following year, the son of Rodolphe III, Hugues, was appointed to the bishopric of Lausanne and in 1023, Rodolphe ceded the county of Vienne to the archbishop. In 1024, on the death of Emperor Henry II, under pressure from the nobles of Burgundy, Rodolphe III was forced to revoke the promises made to his nephew. However, as early as 1025, the new king of Germany Conrad II (1024-1039, elected emperor in 1027) occupied Basel and forced him to renew his promise. He died in September 1032. His death gave rise to a war of succession between Emperor Conrad II and Eudes II, Count of Blois and Troyes and nephew of Rodolphe III.
