In the 19th century, Cambodia, in decline, was threatened by its powerful neighbours: Siam and Annam. Ang Duong ascended the throne in 1847 under the Siamese protectorate. His son and successor Norodom I (1835-1904) was also brought up in Bangkok. From 1854, Cambodia, to counterbalance its invading neighbors, appealed to a French mission. In 1863, Norodom signed a treaty placing Cambodia under French protectorate.
