ARNULF OF CARINTHIE
(887-899)
Arnulf is the son of Frankish King Carloman and his concubine Liutswinde. While his predecessor and uncle Charles the Fat was the last Carolingian ruler to unite the entire Carolingian Empire under his sceptre, Arnulf could overthrow him and assume the kingship of East Francia himself, the legacy of his grandfather Ludwig II of Germany. He also succeeded in consolidating his rule over Lotharingia and the Kingdom of Italy. He was crowned in February 896 as emperor by Pope Formosa in Rome..
